Job Title

Programmer For Processing Chemical Data

Employer

Celignis

Location

Limerick

Description

Background. Celignis is a biomass analysis laboratory that characterises samples for properties relevant to the production of biofuels, energy, chemicals and biobased products. We are also involved in research, being a partner in two Horizon 2020 EU collaborative research projects related to the bioeconomy. We are currently working on developing our own internal Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) software as a key tenet in our progress towards ISO 17025 accreditation for the laboratory. This LIMS software is a web-based platform designed using PHP, SQL, Javascript, CSS, and HTML. Celignis also has key IP based on our custom mathematical models that allow for the chemical composition of biomass to be predicted based on their near infrared (NIR) spectra. As part of an ongoing EU research project we will be improving these algorithms, using programs such as R and OCTAVE/MATLAB, based on advanced chemometric principles. Position. We are recruiting for a person who will be responsible for the following three tasks: Development and expansion of our LIMS software with the target of completion of a fully functional system suitable for audit under ISO 17025 accreditation. Coding of algorithms for the processing of NIR and chemical data with the target that the requirements and deliverables of our EU research project are achieved on time. Integration of the outputs of the NIR algorithms with the LIMS software for purposes of quality control regarding analytical work undertaken in the laboratory. We are a young ambitious start-up company with aspirations to expand our operations over the coming years. We are looking for someone who shares our ambition, motivation, and drive and will be comfortable working within a start-up and contributing the energies that would be required to facilitate its growth. The position is for a 12-month period. There is also the possibility for contract renewal beyond that period providing additional funding has been secured. Requirements and Expectations. Degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) in programming, mathematics, or a related discipline. A high level of experience in the following computer languages: PHP, CSS, SQL, HTML, Javascript. As part of the selection process we will request submission of code, written by yourself, utilising these disciplines. A strong understanding of matrix algebra (e.g. eigenvalues, singular value decomposition etc.). Examples of your own code utilising principles of matrix algebra would be a bonus. Experience in using chemometric software (such as R and OCTAVE/MATLAB) in practical applications would be preferable. Be comfortable handling chemical data. Strong command of spoken and written English. Proven capability of working to deadlines. Integrate with and positively contribute towards the working practices, drive, and ethos of an ambitious start-up. Motivated, takes the initiative, and willingness to develop new skills. Responsibilities. Understanding the requirements of ISO 17025 accreditation and how a well-designed LIMS software can help to achieve this goal through the automisation of quality control procedures and by helping to minimise the added-work requirements for lab workers and lab managers. Interacting with management, lab workers, and project managers regarding the development and optimisation of the LIMS software. Implementing improvements in the LIMS software, through adhering to specific time-dependent milestones and deliverables outlined by management. Developing a strong understanding of chemometric principles and the regression techniques used to link spectral (NIR) and chemical data. Use of chemometric software, such as The Unscrambler, R, Octave, and MATLAB. Coding of algorithms in such software that will allow “local regression” principles to be used to develop custom predictive models for each sample and each analyte. Optimising these algorithms to improve predictive accuracies for a range of analytes and sample types. Automating the algorithms so that predictions can be obtained for multiple analytes and multiple samples with minimal user input. Integrating the outputs of these algorithms with the LIMS software, for internal quality control purposes, and with Celignis’s online Database, for the provision of analytical data to clients. Presenting outputs of the work regarding NIR algorithm development at research project meetings and conferences. Dealing honestly in all matters relating to the Employer’s business. Remuneration. Between €27-40k per annum, depending on level of relevant experience. Start Date. Approximately February 2018. Interested? If you have relevant experience and qualifications please contact Dan Hayes on 061 518 440 or email a cover letter, explaining how you fulfil the requirements, and an up-to-date CV to dan@celignis.com. Applications that do not include a cover letter will be rejected. CVs that do not include the grade achieved at undergraduate/postgraduate level will also result in rejection of the application.
